Meadowhall staff volunteer at Tinsley Community Allotment for Community Week

Community Week at Meadowhall launched Monday 24th of June 2024 to give the centre’s staff a week to support local community organisations each day of the week, and the chance for employees to get together and connect with each other, as well as surrounding communities.

Taken over by a new team in 2016, the Tinsley Community Allotment project, partly funded by Meadowhall and partially ran by Jacquie Dace and Jess Banham, allows local children to grow their own fruit and vegetables. The Meadowhall team regularly offers their services to the Allotment, and this month, 11 members of Meadowhall staff helped with a number of gardening tasks, including weeding, strimming, painting a strawberry planter, setting seeds, cutting hedges, laying new ground bark and building new compost beds.

The team were also able to harvest a range of vegetables and fruits this year, including cucumbers, lettuce, mangetout, garlic, and raspberries.

“The Tinsley Allotment is a favourite project amongst the Meadowhall team. It’s a chance to get out of the office, take part in some team-building tasks, be outdoors and get your hands dirty! Jacqui Dace and Jess Banham are always community-focused and help us to give back to our local community,” said Darren Pearce, Centre Director at Meadowhall.

Supercars Event Success

The event was a resounding success, showcasing over 30 of the most stunning Supercars, much to the delight of enthusiasts and novices alike. The roar of engines and the chance to sit in these automotive marvels created an unforgettable experience. The Sporting Bears’ rides in a Supercar were a highlight, offering a rare opportunity to feel the power of these vehicles firsthand. The presence of emergency service vehicles added an educational twist, captivating attendees of all ages. Iconic cars from beloved films and TV shows, like the Tumbler from Batman and Lightning McQueen from Cars, brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to the day.

The event’s triumph was underscored by the significant funds raised—over £30,000 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, a remarkable charity providing care for children and young adults with life-shortening conditions. Their dedication to creating precious memories for families during the most challenging times is supported largely by community efforts and donations. For those interested in contributing to this noble cause, further information on how to assist Bluebell Wood can be found on their website.

Meadowhall VE Day Tea Dance

Meadowhall hosted a special Tea Dance on Wednesday 8th May to celebrate VE Day.

The session took place from 10am until 11:30am on the Upper Oasis with those attending enjoying a vibrant mix of Sequence, Latin and Ballroom dancing with live music from local musician Audrey Robinson, one of the UK’s leading organists for sequence and ballroom dancing.

The dances, which were first introduced in the early 90s, invite members of the local community to come together to dance, reminisce and enjoy a cup of tea. They are free of charge, with routines suitable for all abilities and free tea, coffee and cake provided.

The session is the latest in the series of popular Tea Dances at Meadowhall, which offer older members of the community a chance to socialise, meet new people and exercise together.

Tough mudder

Beginning in February with a staff Bake Sale, Challenge 10 aims to complete one challenge every month, with each challenge raising more funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity, which was Meadowhall’s charity partner for the first half of 2023, and Walking with the Wounded, a charity close to the heart of not only the Meadowhall team but also the charity partner of Churchill Group, who have pledged to donate £1000 to the cause.

The Meadowhall team have completed 7 out of 10 challenges so far, raising over £7400.

Dean Checkett, External Services Manager at Meadowhall who launched Challenge 10, said,

The 9th year of the Young Readers Programme at Meadowhall

Community Week at Meadowhall commenced on Monday 19th of June to give the centre’s staff a week to support local community organisations each day of the week, and the chance for employees to get together and connect. To end Community Week, Meadowhall launched the Young Readers Programme at the centre for the ninth year.

To finish off Community Week with a big bang, Meadowhall launched the Young Readers Programme, which welcomed 225 school children from Beck Primary, Kimberworth Community Primary and Wincobank Academy for storytelling sessions, all in the name of helping children fall in love with reading. These sessions allowed local children to listen to award-winning poems from Dominic Berry, as well as participate in creating an epic poem of all the student’s favourite things!

“Supporting our community is very important to us, so we’re incredibly proud of the Young Readers Programme and all the local children and families we’ve been able to help in the last nine years,” said Darren Pearce, Centre Director at Meadowhall.”

During the literacy-focused events, pupils also took part in a range of fun activities, including designing their own emoji at the Apple Store, participating in a treasure hunt at Waterstones, and making their own bubble bath soap bar at Lush, as well as taking home a book of their choice!

Martin Galway, head of school programmes at the National Literacy Trust, said: “The right book, at the right moment, can change a child’s life.

“That’s what the Young Readers Programme has been doing with British Land for the last 12 years – giving children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to experience enchanting story-telling events, and to choose books that speak to their interests and passions.”

Meadowhall hosts a Staff Bake Sale for Community Week

Community Week at Meadowhall launched Monday 19th of June to give the centre’s staff a week to support local community organisations each day of the week, and the chance for employees to get together and connect.

Cakes

The Meadowhall team get their hands dirty with chocolate and flour, rather than mud and rubbish from the Community Litter Pick, in the community bake sale. With a delicious selection of cakes, muffins, tray bakes and more, the team raised £225, which was split between charity partners Weston Park Cancer Charity and Walking with the Wounded as part of the Meadowhall Challenge 10 initiative, an internal series of challenges which staff can volunteer to participate in, supported by Churchill Group. Funds for this initiative are currently over £7400.

A previous Bake Sale in February for Challenge 10 raised over £300 in one day thanks to the contributions of both cake donations and sales made by the Meadowhall team. Read more about Challenge 10 here.

Celebrating Pride at Meadowhall

For more than 5 years, Meadowhall has shown its unity and pride with our rainbow lights and rainbow stairs where thousands have climbed every day through the month of June.

This year, we wanted to connect with our Meadowhall community and the South Yorkshire communities and show we’re all under one love and one flag.

We invited all retailers and staff within the Meadowhall domes to participate and show what Pride means to them. Our very own Cleaning Team, Martin and Steve, at Meadowhall, said,

“Pride to us is everything. Each year we love coming together with the LGBTQ+ community and visiting pride events anywhere we can get to. All people from any walk of life are welcome to attend.”

Martin and Steve

Whilst Pride Month is extremely important in celebrating the LGTBQ+ community, Meadowhall is committed to keeping open conversations with our local queer communities all year round. That’s why we’ve partnered with local pride events in Worksop, Chesterfield, and Doncaster, and have dedicated our digital platforms to promoting their events and services.

For each Pride Event, Meadowhall has promised to light up the rainbow lights to show our support.

Dan Walker from Chesterfield said,

“Thank you for all your support, not just for Pride month, but all year round.’
